The first Slovak National Museum building in Martin, dating back to 1908, is currently the seat of the Andrej Kmeť Museum, where natural science expositions are installed for visitors. The founder of Slovak museums, Andrej Kmeť, made a major contribution to its construction. Since August 1994, the building has been included in the list of national cultural monuments.
The museum serves as the regional homeland center of Turiec region. It documents the nature of northwestern Slovakia, especially in the regions of Turiec, Orava, Kysuce and Liptov. It also focuses on the history of the Slovak Museum Society and its visitors, with an emphasis on the personality of Andrej Kmeť. The museum manages more than 500,000 collection items.
The Andrej Kmeť Museum has two permanent exhibitions:
Kmetianum - dedicated to the work of Andrej Kmeť and also introduces the history of the Museum Slovak Society.
Nature of Turiec - the exhibition is divided into two parts. The first part is devoted to inanimate nature, while presenting the individual periods of geological development of the Turks. The second part is devoted to living nature and is presented from the ecological point of view in the form of individual biotope formations.
Andrej Kmeť Museum is part of the Slovak National Museum in Martin. In addition to the permanent exhibitions, it also offers visitors a wide range of short-term exhibitions that broaden and complement the permanent exhibitions.
