The beautiful region of northern Slovakia is bordered by a mountain called Babia Hill. It can also boas of some extraordinary attributes. Babia Hill is the northernmost outlook point in Slovakia and the highest peak of Orava Beskydy.
In addition, Babia Hill also represents the boundary between two water divides. Watercourses from the northern (Polish) side flow into the Baltic Sea and from the southern (Slovak) side into the Black Sea.
Babia Hill rises to a height of 1724 m and the ascent here is considered to be one of the most beautiful and interesting in this area. From the southern route, Babia Hill looks very round and moderate, but with regard to the surrounding landscape relief, it is necessary to climb up to 1000 altitude meters.
The starting point for beautiful Orava tourism towards Babia Hill is mostly the village of Oravská Polhora, more precisely the chalet of Slaná voda (The Saltwater).
Prepare yourself for a long and challenging hike with a high elevation. It takes about 7 hours to get there and back. A part of the marked hiking trail is also the Slaná voda educational trail.
You can also make your way to the ridge by visiting Hviezdoslav's gamekeeper's lodge, where the exhibition dedicated to his famous work Hájnikova žena (The Gamekeeper's Wife) is located. In close proximity, there is also the memorial house of Milo Urban.
In addition to the Slovak natural beauty enthusiasts, you can also meet Polish tourists on the top. The peak of Baba Hill is rocky and the area is open without trees, so prepare for stronger wind.
In addition, there is a memorial dedicated to Pope John Paul II, who loved the summit of Babia Hill and climbed to this peak many times. The stone memorial was built in his honour by villages of Oravská Polhora, Rabča, Rabčice and Sihelná.
The circular view from this mountain range will enchant you. One of the most beautiful is the view of the south side towards Orava basin with water reservoir Orava, further on the ridges of Orava Magura, Choč Hills and Low Tatras.
Babia Hill is also interesting for its unique flora. On its perimeter, the so-called primaeval forest on Babia Hill has been identified. In 1926, there was a reservation Valley under Babia Hill declared, where mainly blueberry forests are continuously passing into the scrub zone.
