Žiarska Valley in the Western Tatras is one of the most visited valleys in Liptov. You can admire and discover not only the creations of nature, but also creations of human hands. An example of such a human creation is the Bear's Tunnel in Liptov.
The Bear's Tunnel is unique in its length as the old mining Tatra works. It is the longest tunnel, measuring 550 m. The bear gallery was officially open for the public in April 2012.
Perhaps by name, you think that the bears used to live in it. But the story is different. In front of the gallery, there was once a tin plate that warned visitors that they were entering a territory where bears live abundantly. Coincidentally, it was just a few meters before entering the mine and so the tunnel started to be called the Bear's Tunnel just by by chance.
The tunnel runs along the quartz vein, so it is thought that miners were mining precious metals here, apparently gold.
The Bear's Tunnel is the only old mining work made available in Liptov. It will give you the experience you will remember for a long time. You will go through the places that a man has created with hard work in decades with the prospect of getting gold and all in a unique atmosphere of burning oil burner.
Access to the tunnel is simple. At the end of Liptovský Mikuláš turn left to Žiar. You will pass the housing estate, the villages of Vitálišovce, Smrečany and Žiar up to the paid (in the season) parking lot in the mouth of the Žiarska Valley.
