A charming, even romantic, historical building in Bratislava's Old Town is the Church of St. Elizabeth of Hungary, also known as the Modrý kostolík (Blue Church). This attractive sacral building has Art Nouveau elements and was designed by the Budapest architect Ödön Lechner.
The Church of St. Elizabeth is a single-aisle building with an attached cylindrical tower. The interior, exterior and even the roofing of the church are painted with pale blue colors. The facade and interior walls of the church are decorated with blue majolica. The main element of the facade of the church as well as the main altar is a mosaic with a figure of St. Elizabeth holding roses in her arms.
The church was originally supposed to be a symbolic mausoleum of Empress Elizabeth, known as Sissi. Today the Blue Church is a Roman Catholic parish church where regular worhisp services are held. It is interesting that this jewel of Art Nouveau represents Slovakia in the Brussels Mini-Europe park.
