Glacial lakes are unambiguously the glittering jewels of the High Tatras . They not only complete the alpine atmosphere, but also soften it in a way.The highest situated lake in the High Tatras is called Modré pleso (Blue Lake).
It lies in Dolinka pod Sedielkom, bounded by the majestic south wall of the Malý Ľadový štít (Little Ice Peak). It got its name thanks to its dark blue colour. However, it is only delusional, as the lake is covered with surrounding rock walls.
The Blue Lake is covered with snow and ice until summer. Thanks to this, its water level is relatively stable and never dries up. Its depth is 4.5 meters. The small cold stream flows from the lake, which is part of the Poprad river basin.
Hiking to the Blue Ball is possible only from 16 June to 31 October. A green-marked tourist trail that connects the Little Cold Valley with Javorová leads to it. The route is quite challenging. The ascend from Hrebienok to Téry's Cottage takes 3 hours, and from Tery's Cottage to the Blue Lake, it is another 45 minutes.
