The Botanical Garden in Košice is the largest botanical garden in Slovakia thanks to its area of approximately 30 ha. The area of the botanical garden is situated at the foot of the hills near the northern outskirts of Košice. Established in 1950, it is a part of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University and since 2002 also a protected area.
The Botanical Garden in Košice has 4 600 plant species, making it one of the most important in Central Europe. The most precious is the collection of approximately 1,200 cacti and succulents, which is said to be the largest collection of cacti in the whole territory of the former Czechoslovakia.
The vast area is the forest part of the botanical garden, which consists of forest units of native species of natural grouping. The exposition of beautiful orchids is also attractive and fragrant. Equally interesting is certainly the exposition of insectivorous plants and other species of tropical and subtropical flora found in greenhouses.
The Botanical Garden includes the Herbarium and the Thaisz Library. The beekeeping nature trail made up of 13 information boards was also opened to visitors to the botanical garden. The smallest visitors will appreciate the mini zoo with sheep, goats, hens, pheasants or bunnies. The fun for the little ones will also take care of installed climbing frames and swings.
The botanical garden can be visited individually or in groups. Greenhouses are open all year round on weekdays and public holidays. The outdoor area is open seasonally. On weekdays, organized groups can also use the guide service.
