The Banská Štiavnica Calvary is an inherent landscape element of this town. It is built on a hill, making it visible from almost every point in Banská Štiavnica. The Calvary in Banská Štiavnica is a complex of sacral objects in the Baroque style consisting of three churches, nineteen chapels and a sculpture of the Virgin Mary.
The Calvary was built in 1751 and was founded by the Jesuits at that time. For two centuries, Calvary flourished with a rich spiritual life. Its purpose was to present the events of Jesus' Passion on the cross. Since 1951, the Calvary gradually decayed and lost its purpose.
Thanks to activists from Banská Štiavnica '91 Association, Slovak Scouting and VUB Foundation, this beautiful Baroque complex was restored after 11 years, thanks to which it can serve its purpose again. Calvary can be admired in its full beauty not only by domestic but also foreign tourists.
The Calvary also includes two expositions - an exposition on the History and present of the Calvary in the Lower Church and an exposition of Calvary in the asylum, which is located in the citadel of the Old Castle of Banská Štiavnica. If you don't want to visit Calvary alone, you can order a guided tour and choose from either short or long tour.
The area of Calvary is freely available throughout the year. The exposition in the new Information Center on Pod Kalváriou Street is open seasonally. Entry is free.
