In the central part of the ridge of the Low Tatras, there is the only accessible high-altitude cave in Slovakia, which is also one of the largest and most important high-altitude caves in Slovakia. It is a unique Cave of Dead Bats, which got its distinctive name because it is the largest burial place of bats in Slovakia.
The cave of dead bats is a rugged cave, with 14 floors with a total length of 19,260 m and a depth of 320 m. The largest area of the cave is the so-called Bystrický dome, located on 7 floors at a depth of 180 meters directly below the cottage of M. R. Štefánik.
The cave can also be visited with children from the age of 6, as the route is a bit more difficult than in regular caves. It is characterized mainly by its rocky paths and rope trapezoidal belays.
For the more experienced, the cave offers a route called Speleotreking B and C. Both require experience in mountain terrain as well as climbing skills. Routes are exposed and need to be secured by rope techniques.
The cave of dead bats is accessible by greed marked hiking trail from the Trangoška mountain resort. The climb takes about 45 minutes.
