Part of the main square and thus the histric core of Banská Bystrica is an important architectural monument Thurzo House, which is forever tied to the Thurzo family. It is located in the build-up area of town houses. In the years 1495 - 1548, the Thurzo-Fugger mining company was housed here.
During its rich history, Thurzo's House underwent several architectural adjustments and survived difficult times during the World War II, when he was hit by an air bomb. Since August 1958, the Central Slovak Museum has its seat in Thurzo's house after a complete construction renovation.
For the general public, there is a social science exposition focused on the historical transformations of the Banská Bystrica region from the earliest times of prehistoric times, through the Middle Ages, modern times to the beginning of the 20th century.
On the ground floor of the house, there is a jewel of the Central Slovak Museum, the so-called Green Hall. The room is distinguished by its beautiful barrel vault as well as its beautiful decorations in the form of figural and vegetable paintings dating from the second half of the 15th century.
The Thurzo House also offers new historical and ethnographic exhibitions and a regular series of lectures entitled "Meetings with the past under the green vault" about selected chapters not only of our history.
