The largest dominating feature of the whole town castle complex and the oldest building in Banská Bystrica is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, also called German church. The church was built in the 13th century on the foundations of the Romanesque basilica.
The church has undergone several reconstructions until it has taken its present form. The interior of the temple conceals the true gems of Gothic art in Slovakia. The main and largest element is the altar with two paintings - the Assumption of the Virgin and the Holy Trinity.
In its original form, the Chapel of St Barbara, known for the late Gothic altar of Master Paul, has preserved. You can admire the original vault or frescoes of saints. It is also worth noting the bronze baptismal font. Valuable temple treasure are liturgical objects from the 17th and 18th centuries.
