The Dunajec Breakthrough is an impressive canyon on the border of Slovakia with Poland. It has a length of approximately 9 km and was created by the Dunajec River pervading through Pieniny. The river valley is 200 to 300 meters deep, with 7 large meanders formed by the river.
It represents the most landscaped and naturally valuable area of the Pieniny National Park. A red marked trail as well as a marked cycling trail that connects the Červený Kláštor with the village of Lesnica both lead through the breakthrough. The educational trail has 10 stops describing the natural attractions of the area.
The unpretentious hike through the Dunajec Breakthrough is one of the most beautiful in Slovakia and contains a number of romantic corners emblazoned with legends. For example, at the end of the breakthrough, there is a karstic spring called Storočná voda (Centenary water), which does not freeze even in winter. The legend about it says that the one who drinks a water from it will live a hundred years.
