In the arms of beautiful nature, in the shade of the surrounding trees, on the hill near the village of Kremnické Bane, there is the Church of St. John the Baptist standing. However, this symbol of fellowship of people from the surrounding villages also bears another attribute -the heart of Europe.
The geographical center of Europe is the center of the tower of Church of St. John the Baptist. There is a legend about why this is where center of Europe is located. It says that because of the rich gold reserves in nearby Kremnica, Kremnické Bane (ie mines of Kremnica) became considered the geographical center of Europe.
The position of the geographical center of Europe has been disputed for decades, and this is why this title is also appropriated by other countries such as Germany, Lithuania and Poland. This is because it is difficult to determine the exact boundaries of the old continent, including the islands included.
In the area of the geographical center of Europe near Kremnické Bane, there is also a memorial of the symbol of the center of Europe with tables placed in the stone of the memorial, commemorating the historical milestones of the Slovak Republic, recording the adoption of the Declaration on the Sovereignty of the Slovak Republic in the National Council of the Slovak Republic, adoption of the Constitution of the Slovak Republic, Declaration of the Slovak Republic etc.
The center of Europe is accessible by car, bus and train, but hiking lovers can also reach it from Kremnica on foot.
