A small village in the east of Slovakia hides great wealth. In the village of Herľany, there is** a cold geyser which is a European rarity**. If you would like to see similar geysers, you would have to travel to Iceland.
The Herľany Geyser was discovered in 1870 when the Herľany Spa Administration decided to look for more abundant sources of mineral water. It was activated artificially, by drilling a borehole 404.5 meters deep. At that times, the water spurted to a height of 4 m and this glamorous splendor lasted five minutes.
The geyser is also unique in that it has its eruption intervals resulting from the action of gas in the form of carbon dioxide. This is related to post-volcanic processes in the Slanské Hills. That is why the Herľany Geyser reaches a temperature of only 14-18 °C.
The frequency of geyser eruptions is currently around 32-36 hours. If you do not want to miss this natural unique, we recommend you to inform yourselves about these intervals in advance, for example at WWW.
And when you arrive here, arm yourself with patience. Geyser of Herľany gradually weakens, so you may have to wait a bit for a planned geyser eruption. But the 25-minute "show" which comes in the end is definitely worth it.
