In the center of Martin, in a beautiful historical building from the end of the 19th century, there is a Literary Museum of the Slovak National Library. It is the central literary museum in Slovakia, whose task is to collect, professionally process, preserve and make accessible museum objects related to the history of Slovak literature.
The museum offers visitors a permanent exhibition of the history of Slovak literature. The exhibition is chronologically divided into nine parts from the beginnings of Slavonic literature in Great Moravia to the beginning of the 20th century and the events of the First World War.
Among the most interesting exhibits of this exposition are original works of art by Slovak artists, historical furniture and various writing instruments from the oldest period. Visitors have a unique opportunity to see rare Old Slavonic texts, codes, first prints and other valuable manuscripts in the form of facsimiles.
The permanent exhibition of the Literary Museum of the Slovak National Library is complemented and developed by temporary exhibitions, which are regularly organized by the museum. Part of the museum is also the National Cemetery, located in the center of Martin and where important Slovak personalities are buried. The museum offers lectured tours of the National Cemetery.
