Just below the hill, on which the Calvary in Nitra - a popular spiritual, sightseeing and tourist place of the locals - stands, there is the Missionary House of the Mother of God. Its premises are used for accommodation of religious, administrative, pastoral and last but not least also museum purposes.
If you would expect icons and other sacral objects to be displayed here, you are wrong. The exhibits on display are a collection of objects donated to the museum by Slovak, Czech, Austrian, but mainly German missionaries of the Society of God's Word.
Collections come from all over the world. They are mostly objects of the daily need of simple people, among whom missionaries live, but also cult and decorative items, clothes, weapons. Part of the collection are exhibits of Father Cardinal Jozef Tomek.
In recent years, the collections of the Mission Museum have been enlarged several times and new exhibits have been added. For example, up to 250 exhibits of animal paddings from all continents were added to the collection. The collection also includes a unique collection of butterflies and beetles.
The museum is available to the general public. It is open during opening hours, but larger groups need notify their visit in advance. Admission to the Mission Museum is optional.
