The best way to learn about the history of money in Slovakia is in the Museum of Coins and Medals. It is located directly in the heart of the mining town of Kremnica.
The specialized numismatic-historical exposition "Obverse and reverse of money" is the only one of its kind in Slovakia. It is located in the premises of an originally Gothic burgher's house on the historic square of Kremnica. The founder of the museum is National Bank of Slovakia.
In the museum, through attractive exhibits, you will learn about the history and development of means of payment in Slovakia from the earliest times through contemporary coins and banknotes to crypto-currencies, as well as the history of medal production.
Part of the tour is also the opportunity to participate in various activities, which will certainly be appreciated especially by children. In the creative workshop, they can design and model their own coin, or try various quizzes and games for smart minds.
The most attractive part of the tour awaits visitors in the basement of the museum. In the unique, hand-hewn andesite lower basement, individual types of historical mining tunnels from the earliest times to the present are installed.
The administration of the museum also includes the City Castle, which was declared a national cultural monument in 1970. The complex is dominated by the Gothic Church of St. Katarina. The Renaissance tower of the church is accessible to visitors and provides a magnificent view of the panorama of the ancient city and its surroundings.
Part of the museum is the Burgher house on the square, which is used for long-term exhibitions dedicated to regional history. Occasional art exhibitions are held in the museum gallery. An interesting feature of the gallery is the so-called green room with renaissance wall paintings from the 16th century.
