Levoča is a royal town with a rich and famous history, which is presently presented not only by Gothic and Renaissance architecture, but also by specialized centers documenting the ancient past. These include the Museum of Special Education, which specializes in the history of special education and the handicapped.
The museum was created by transformation of the original Museum for the Blind in Levoča. The creation of the museum was deserved by typhlopaedia teacher Michal Dzurňák. At present, the museum is located in a burgher house on Master Paul Square 28 and its founder is the Ministry of Education, Science and Research of the Slovak Republic.
The uniqueness of the museum from its inception to the present day lies in the fact that it maps the history of special education as a whole, in particular the four basic paedias - visual, auditory, physical and mental disadvantage. Through a new permanent exhibition, visitors can try out replicas of rare exhibits and get to know the needs and lives of disadvantaged individuals in an unforgettable way.
The permanent exhibition is divided into four separate units:
During the whole tour the lecturer accompanies the visitors. There are also two relaxation zones in the museum, where it is possible to settle down during the tour and, if interested, to watch a documentary film focusing on special education and health disadvantages.
