The National Cemetery in Martin is a national cultural monument founded at the beginning of the 19th century. Besides the Matica slovenská (Slovakia's scientific and cultural institution) and the Slovak National Museum, it is one of the most visited places in Martin. The National Cemetery in Martin became the last resting place of many important personalities of Slovak life.
The National Cemetery is located in the city center and gained its national significance in the second half of the 19th century, when it was entrusted to Matica slovenská. Today the cemetery consists of two parcels and its area divides the main streets into six blocks.
At present, there are about three hundred important personalities buried at the National Cemetery. Older graves of national visitors have mostly simple historical monuments. After 1918, tombstones of art and architectural design began to be added and today it is possible to find here a number of valuable works of our leading artists and architects.
A part of the National Cemetery is the Olympic Memorial, which represents a long-term effort of the Slovak Olympic Committee to establish a symbolic place of reverence, where people can honor the memory of excellent athletes - Olympians.
