The New Castle is one of the most beautiful dominants of Banská Štiavnica. The white Renaissance fortress towering on the Frauenberg Hill (also called Ladies' Hill) was built in the 16th century as part of a fortification against the Turks.
A special feature of the New Castle were the so-called "live clock" that informed the inhabitants of Banská Štiavnica about the current time - by trumpeting every quarter hour, beating the bell every hour.
Today, the interiors of the New Castle include a museum, exhibition of which presents the history of anti-Turkish fighting in Slovakia.
