Follow the footsteps of the ancient past and enjoy not only the mysterious history, but also the breathtaking nature. Just go to the Pohanský hrad (Pagan Castle), which is hidden in the heart of Cerová Highlands. Pagan Castle is actually a mountain range over which the mysterious atmosphere of our ancestors reigns.
This mountain range is situated on the border between Slovakia and Hungary. You can see the castle from a distance, because its rocky outcrops and turrets protrude between the wooded surroundings. The most beautiful are the marginal basalt rocks of the highest point of the peak, reaching an impressive height of up to 30 m.
The castle is a creation of the former volcanic activity, which is characteristic for this locality. There are many basalt fissure caves. These caves are located on the hillsides. The longest one is 182 m long.
The Pagan Castle will not attract you only with its rocks, but also with the beautiful nature everywhere around, as well as the remains of the stone mounds of the prehistoric fort. Archaeological findings have confirmed the settlement in early history.
You can also enjoy beautiful views of the wide and distant surroundings of Slovakia, as well as of Hungary, from the southern side of the Pagan Castle's top plateau. The peak is National Nature Reserve. The easiest way to get here is from the village of Hájnačka (approx. 4 km) or from the village of Šurice (approx. 5 km)
