At the foot of the southern slopes of the Low Tatras, deep in the mountains among the coniferous forests, a silent witness of horrors lies. In the slightly sloping valley, at an altitude of 924 meters, the settlement of Kalište still stood at the beginning of March 1945. The settlement is now declared a National Cultural Monument.
Today, we would in vain search for some clues and data about its development. Only the foundations of warped and burned houses, a cemetery, two houses with a chapel and a lonely, half-tumbled tree above the grave of fallen partisans are witnesses of tragic events. On March 18, 1945, the settlement was burned down. The population that remained alive evicted. Somewhere in the Nazi archives, there is perhaps an order where, beside the name of Kalište, the fatal word "liquidieren" stands.
In two houses, there is an exhibition of the Museum of the Slovak National Uprising under the name Partisan Republic. Along with the exposition, a new memorial was opened and the nature trail is also known under the name "How people of Kalište lived". It consists of 17 information boards, which are located throughout the area.
Access is from Donovaly on foot via the yellow trail (4 - 5 km), or you can use cycling trails from surrounding villages or you may also come on motor vehicles through narrow asphalt road from Moštenice.
