Description
The beginnings of today's Sub-Tatran Museum in Poprad date back to the second half of the 19th century. It was during this period that the Sub-Tatran Museum was founded by the Hungarian Carpathian Association - the first tourist association in Hungary.
The museum registers more than 52,500 pieces of collection items and more than 18,000 volumes of books in the museum library. It offers visitors two new permanent expositions. The first, bearing the name "Poprad and its surroundings in the mirror of ages", presents the history of the settlement of the Tatras region from the Neanderthal to the present.
The second, bearing the name* "Prince's Tomb of Poprad"* is dedicated to a unique archaeological find - the tomb of the magnate from Poprad - Matejovce from the late 4th to early 5th century. The princely grave from Poprad is the only one of its kind in Europe.
Part of the Sub-Tatran Museum in Poprad is an exhibition of folk sculptures located in the garden of the museum. The museum also has its own library, which currently focuses mainly on the acquisition of regional literature. Library services are provided to the public through internal study.
