The ruins of Pustý Castle (i.e. Abandoned Castle) are located near the town of Zvolen over the confluence of the rivers Hron and Slatina. It consists of two castle complexes: Lower and Upper Castle, which are connected by almost 400 meters long stone rampart.
The castle complex was built during the 12th - 14th centuries and was destroyed in the mid-15th century in the war between John Hunyadi and John Jiskra of Brandýs. The most preserved parts of the Pustý Castle are the main entrance gate of the Upper Castle and the ruins of the residential tower of the Lower Castle. There is also archaeological research taking place in the castle, which revealed the older prehistoric fortification on the site of the castle.
The Pustý Castle can be reached from the railway station Zvolen via approx. 3 km long blue tourist trail and a 10-stop educational trail.
