The mysterious and idyllic Revište Castle spreads over the picturesque village of Revišstké Podzámčie. It is a ruin of a Gothic castle on the edge of a forested cliff on the right bank of the Hron River opposite the village of Bzenica.
The castle was probably built in the second half of the 13th century, as well as its counterpart - Šášovský Castle on the other side of Hron. The role of both castles was to protect the trade route leading to the Central Slovak mining towns.
The last use of the castle dates back to the end of the 18th century, when lodginghouses of soldiers were located here. After their departure, the castle was abandoned and already in the 19th century it was only a ruin.
Today, its silhouette creates picturesque ruins set in dense forest stands. Rescue reconstruction works are under way in the castle area today to make it easily accessible to tourists of all ages, but also in order to stabilize the castle ruins so that even the next generations can enjoy them.
Access to the castle is not demanding and is suitable for families with children. It lis secured by the asphalt road through the village of Revištské Podzámčie to the marked parking lot. From there, there is a 400 meter long, marked forest path, which is lined with information boards informing visitors about the owners of Revište Castle.
From the upper castle there is a beautiful view of the Hron valley, the town of Žiar nad Hronom and Štiavnické Mountains. The castle grounds come to life especially during the summer. Various events such as Fairytale Tour and Night of Castles and Ruins take place here.
