Šariš Castle was a medieval power center of Šariš region. Its ruins are situated on a hill above the town of Veľký Šariš, northwest of Prešov. Archaeological research proved the settlement of the castle hill in Neolithic, late Stone Age and in the Bronze Age (13th - 11th century BC).
The construction of the stone castle began in the 13th century. During the centuries, the castle changed owners until a store of gunpowder exploded in the castle in 1660 and damaged the castle considerably. Later on, they used it only for troop accommodation. In 1687, the castle burned down and was not restored again.
Today, the castle is a popular place for walks of the inhabitants of Prešov and its surroundings. There is a marked, approximately 2 km long hiking trail leading from Veľký Šariš and Šarisské Michaľany and it is also possible to get on a bike here. The access road also serves as an educational trail. The entire castle hill is the National Nature Reserve.
