One of the oldest regional galleries in Slovakia is the Šariš Gallery in Prešov. It is located in an originally Renaissance house, built around 1600. The Šariš Gallery has the status of a regional gallery of the Prešov Self-Governing Region and manages one of the highest quality and most interesting gallery collections in Slovakia.
Šariš Gallery was founded in 1956, but its exhibition activities began only a year later. The gallery focuses mainly on northeastern Slovakia, but also seeks the work of artists from all over eastern Slovakia.
It offers visitors a permanent exhibition called Sacral Art of the 15th-19th century from the collections of the Šariš Gallery. It includes remarkable collections of wooden sculpture, rare icons, as well as painting. The most valuable exhibit of the entire gallery collection is the icon of St. John the Baptist of North Carpathian Provenance.
In addition to the permanent exhibition, the gallery also offers short-term exhibitions, lectures, discussions, studio visits, open art lessons, concerts, literary bands, club activities and consultancy. Last but not least, the gallery also enables attendance study in the archive.
