The Slovak Mining Museum - Berggericht is the only one of its kind in Slovakia. It was founded in 1964 by the merger of the City Museum and the State Mining Museum Dionýz Štúr. The museum provides a comprehensive picture and idea of mining as well as its related industries. Last but not least, it also documents the history of Banská Štiavnica and its surroundings
Its rich collection consists of mineralogical-bearing, mining-technical, ethnographic, artistic-historical, archaeological and numismatic objects. The main seat of the museum is in the historical building complex Kammerhof - former seat of Chamber counts and mining directorate.
A total of eight exhibitions are prepared for visitors focusing on the history of Slovak mining and Banská Štiavnica itself as a mining town of European importance. One of the most fascinating expositions is certainly the Mineralogical Exposition located in the national cultural monument of the Berggericht - a former mining court.
Visitors will find more than 400 different types of minerals from locations around the world, which are organized into a currently valid taxonomic system. Rare specimens include a sample of hessite from the Botes site in Romania, stephanite and polybazite from Hodruša, and a pharmacosiderite from Nova Bana.
In the courtyard of Berggericht, there is a mining corridor with a length of 75 m and a horseshoe-shaped ground plan. Visitors can get acquainted with the rock environment, typical methods of reinforcement used in mining and mine carts - the so called "huntiks".
