Opal mines in the village of Červenica were the only mined site in the world until the discovery of opal deposits in Mexico and Australia in the 19th century. Slovak expensive opal was particularly popular with members of the family of Emperor Napoleon. Empress Josephine wore the most famous opal Trojan fire. The largest opal named Harlequin was found in 1775 at the bottom of the creek in the village of Červenica and today it is housed in the Natural History Museum in Vienna.
In the post-war period, the mines were closed due to the poor economic situation and only nowadays are they coming back to life and the locality is open to tourists. The main mining corridors are more than 30 km long and are spread over 15 dead end tunnels.
The mines are open all year round and have a constant temperature of 4 - 6 ° C. Excursions are from Monday to Sunday at 9.30, 11.00, 12.30, 14.00, 15.30.
