The architecturally most interesting and most beautiful monument of the town of Spišská Nová Ves is situated on the longest lenticular square in Europe. It is called the Provincial House - historical building of medieval town hall. Today the building houses the Spiš Museum, which was founded in 1951. The museum has a large fund of collections with natural, historical, artistic, historical, music and ethnographic collections.
In the premises of the Provincial House, the Spiš Museum has a permanent exhibition entitled “Nature and History of the Spiš Region”. The exhibition provides visitors with the geographical, geological, paleontological, botanical and zoological characteristics of the orographic units:Slovak Paradise, Spišskogemerské Rudohorie (Spiš-Gemer Ore Mountains), Hornád Basin and Levočské Hills.
The history of the region is presented by exhibits of collections from archeology, mining and crafts. Among the exhibits in this section are exhibits of mining tools, paleontological findings from the region (fossils of the mastodont Mammut borsoni, cave bear, etc.), as well as archaeological collections documenting the development of human society in the region from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages.
