One of the oldest and most important churches in Slovakia is undoubtedly the Co-Cathedral of St. Nicholas in Prešov. In the past, it was considered one of the most perfect hall churches in the former Kingdom of Hungary. Today, it is the most important and oldest historical building in Prešov.
The origin of the co-catedral dates back to the 13th century, where the church of the German settlement was in its place. It burned down several times and as a German Evangelical temple it was used for the last time during the rebellion of Francis II. Rákóczi in r. 1705 - 1711. From that time to the present day it is a Roman Catholic parish church.
The interior of the co-catedral is as charming and impressive as the exterior. Originally, the temple had up to 12 Gothic altars. However, they were destroyed in fires, or as a result of religious fighting. Particularly valuable items from the first half of the 14th century is a sculpture of the Crucified, a statue of Suffering Christ by Master Paul of Levoča, as well as a sculpture of Archangel Gabriel.
From the tower of the co-catedral, there is a wonderful view of the whole city. You can visit it during business hours. The € 1 contribution is voluntary. In the cathedral, there are regular worship and concerts, which are accompanied by tones of more than 300 years old organ.
