Description

If you come to the parts of the Strečno Gorge or to the picturesque village of Strečno, do not forget to stop on the high limestone cliff. The magnificent Strečno Castle stands there since ancient times. Today's inner Gothic castle was built on the foundations from the 14th century. However, the archaeological findings show that the castle hill was already inhabited in the Bronze and Iron Age.

The first holders of the castle was Balassa family. Later, there were several owners of the castle, including Matthew Csák of Trenčín, Pongrác family, Kostka family, Wesselényi family, but the best known was Bošňák family.

From this genus came also good-natured and modest Sophia Bošnák (or Bosniak). She was extremely popular among the subjects. She liked her people very much, she was good and nice to them. She died relatively young, and since then the castle has been abandoned and has become uninhabitable.

After archaeological research, the castle was secured, reinforced and reconstructed. Since 1995, it has been made available to the public. At present, there is a permanent exposition of the Považské Museum in the castle.

The original medieval road (now paved), which bypasses the castle gate, leads to the castle, on which you can get to the entrance gate with a bridge over the rocky moat. There is a beautiful view of the wide surroundings from the castle.

Below the castle, you can see the medieval village of Paseka, which is also a relaxing zone. It was built authentically according to contemporary medieval buildings. There are five completely equipped wooden houses with straw roofs - a house of a medieval baker, a fisherman, a folk healer and a cozy pilgrim. There is a wooden playground for children as well.

The Strečno Castle is open seasonally, so it is necessary to check in advance the schedule of opening hours. During the year, there are also various events taking place in the castle that bring the history and life of the castle closer. During the summer season, the castle also hosts a night tour.
