In the idyllic environment of the limb grove, near the Poprad Mountain Lake under the western sides of Ostrva Hill, there is a memorial place, which is frequently visited by tourists. It is a symbolic cemetery in memory of those who left their lives in the High Tatras and, exceptionally, the Tatrans who died in the mountains of the world.
The symbolic cemetery was created with the idea of gathering tables of victims scattered throughout the High Tatras and concentrating them in one dignified place. The area of the symbolic cemetery is nicely decorated, there are 362 plaques and 56 hand-carved, colorful Detvian wooden crosses. The whole place is dominated by a chapel.
It is closed to visitors every year from 1 January to 30 June. The most convenient way to the symbolic cemetery is one from the stop of the Tatra tram to the chalet near Poprad Mountain Lake. In the final section of the asphalt road below the walls of Ostrvy, there is a turn to the right. From there, it is only 5 minutes to the cemetery by a footpath.
