The mountains are beautiful, but they can also be treacherous and dangerous. In the Demänovská Valley, in the locality of Stodôlky, a symbolic cemetery was created for victims of the mountain disasters of the Low Tatras, which serves as a monument and at the same time to alert those alive.
In the area of this symbolic cemetery, there are 146 tables with the names of the victims, that are watched by a sculpture of a "mountain pieta" depicting a mother grieving over a dead child. There is also a chapel with the inscription "Respect for victims, alert for alive ones" or 6-meter high carved wooden cross.
Visitors can honor the memory of people who loved mountains wholeheartedly which became fatal to them. The cemetery can be reached on marked hiking trails from Biela Púť (1.5 km), Vrbické pleso (2 km) or from Demänovská Cave of Freedom (1.5 km).
