In Trenčín, at Štúrovo Square, there is a unique fountain, from which Valentine the Nix peeps at all passers-by.
Valentine the Nix is a fairy-tale waterman dressed in typical hat and tailcoat, who crawls out of his well and at regular intervals springs the water from his mouth. During the hot summer days, it is not only a great attraction, but also a pleasant refreshment.
The Valentine's sculpture dates back to 1998 and is connected with interesting myth. It says that the nix wandered here from Moravia and fell in love with Anna, a gingerbread girl, who returned his love. But their common happiness was resisted by the inhabitants of the city who did not like the nix at all. One day, however, the house of Anna began to burn. The nix did not hesitate, rushed to the Váh river and opened new springs from the ground that extinguished the fire. Anicka survived the misfortune, but the nix didn't.
And so in the places where the water was rising, the city's inhabitants had wells built. In memory of the heroic nix, they later built a statue with his portrait. During the summer, there are wooden benches laid in its surroundings, from where you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Trenčín Castle. In the evening, a unique fountain is complemented with light effects.
