The Slanica Island of Art is a tiny island in the middle of the Orava dam. It is a remnant of the flooded village of Slanica, which forever disappeared under the surface of the Orava dam in 1953.
Only the hill with preserved Baroque church of St. Cross and calvary, which once dominated the village, has been preserved from the village. Today, it is a popular tourist attraction, which is visited by tourists from Slovakia and abroad.
In the church, there is a permanent exhibition of folk art from the collections of the Orava Gallery and in the exterior of the island there is a lapidary of the Orava stonework of the 18th and 19th century. An exposition of the History of flooded villages and the construction of the Orava Dam is installed in the former tomb.
The island is a protected area and a natural monument. It is a beautiful and photogenic place reminiscent of an abandoned island, whose life has been stuck on a quiet surface of a water dam.
In the summer season, a boat from Slanická Osada (Námestovo) can take you through the Orava Dam with stop on this island, so you can admire this memorial site.
