Immediately above the village of Podhradie, the romantic ruins of Topoľčany Castle rise to the heights. It was built at the end of the 13th century as a royal castle. The castle had several owners, including the Széchényi family, Ország family, Forgách family or Stummer family.
Like other castles, Topoľčany Castle did not avoid gloomy times. The castle was conquered and burnt, but at the same time, during its history, it also experienced the splendor and glory in the form of reconstruction, extension or rebuilding into a Renaissance splendid mansion.
The main parts of the castle have been preserved to date - the prismatic tower, the walls of the upper castle and the walls of the first fortress. In the interior of the best preserved prismatic tower was created a small exhibition on the history of the castle. The castle tower also offers a beautiful view of the Ponitrie region, the ridges of Tribeč and Vtáčnik, and Považský Inovec.
A narrow about 200 m long asphalt road from the village of Podhradie leads to the castle, which after a while turns into a field road with a more difficult, but not a long climb. Visiting the ruins of Topoľčany Castle is a pleasant trip suitable for all ages.
