Vlkolínec is one of the jewels of Slovak folk architecture. Its origins date back to the 14th century. Today, this picturesque submontane settlement is an administrative part of Ružomberok.
Vlkolínec resembles a medieval village residence - with wooden architecture and undisturbed development of log houses - surrounded by forest and narrow stripes of fields and pastures. There is a museum called Roľnícky dom (Peasant's House), a fire-fighting exposition, a children's park and occasionally various interesting exhibitions are held there too.
Since 1993, Vlkolínec has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The number of permanent residents is very small today.
An educational trail and a marked cycling route from Ružomberok lead through Vlkolínec.
