Hervartov is another eastern Slovak village, which can boast of a beautiful wooden church. However, its uniqueness lies in the fact that it is the oldest preserved wooden church in Slovakia. In 2008, along with 7 other wooden churches of the Carpathian Arch, it was registered in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Wooden church of St. Francis of Assisi has been in the heart of the village since the 15th century. The charming sacred building is made of red spruce and was built under the influence of Gothic style, which is reflected mainly on the slender, rectangular windows and steep, high gabled roof. The wooden church consists of a polygonal sanctuary, a nave, a sacristy and an underpass, which later became a space for women, the so-called "babinec" (hen party).
Every visitor who enters the church is first captivated by the rich paintings with figural and plant motifs. The center of the church is the main altar depicting the Virgin Mary, St. Catherine of Alexandria and St. Barbara. The most valuable artistic and historical monuments include the figural motifs of Adam and Eve in Paradise, Fight of St. George with the dragon and the Parable of the wise and foolish virgins.
Wooden church of St. Francis of Assisi belongs to the administration of the Roman Catholic Parish Office in Richvaldov. If you are interested in viewing the interior of the church, it is necessary to report in advance by telephone.
