Description
The Museum of Upper Nitra in Prievidza is one of the youngest museums in Slovakia. Founded in 1985, but to this day, during its relatively short existence, it has managed to add more than a quarter of a million collection items to its collection fund, many of which are of international importance.
The collections of the Upper Nitra Museum consist of archaeological, ethnological, historical, botanical, numismatic, zoological and geological collections. These are presented to visitors through a permanent exhibition called HISTORIAE SUPERIOR NITRIENSIS - History of Upper Nitra.
The most valuable are the archaeological finds of mid-Palaeolithic cultures in the form of chipped industry, a rich inventory of Lusatian burial grounds, a silver treasure from a Roman grave, or even a Romanesque sword from the 11th century. A large collection of invertebrates and unique paleontological findings of the Tertiary and flora fauna are of European importance.
The Upper Nitra Museum also regularly organizes short-term events, presentations, educational activities and exhibitions of partner domestic and foreign museums or presentations of interest groups and private collectors.
