The origin of the national sanctuary - the Basilica of Our Lady of Seven Sorrows in Šaštín dates back to 1736, when the present basilica, according to the plans of Matej Vépi, along with the adjacent monastery, were built by the monks of St. Paul - Pauline fathers.
During pilgrimages, especially, at the Feast of the Holy Spirit (Pentecost) and the Celebration of the Our Lady of Seven Sorrows (September 15), the town and the basilica are visited by tens of thousands of pilgrims. However, pilgrims come all year round, not only from Slovakia but also from abroad, especially neighbouring countries. The basilica is closely linked to the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows from 1564, whose worship was granted in 1732 by Archbishop Imrich Esterházy. This is a late Gothic Danubian work by an unknown author.
