The ruins of Blatnica Castle are located on a steep hill in the Greater Fatra Mountains.

It was built in the second half of the 13th century primarily to protect the important trade route Magna Via. After the more westernly situated road started to be used, Blatnica Castle lost its importance and relevance. Therefore, the monarchs were not very interested in it either.

Only Révay noble family extended the castle and in the second half of the 16th century and at the beginning of the 17th century, they built large ravelin with new buildings. After the uprisings, the significance of the Blatnica Castle fell again. In 1744, it was once again repaired, but in 1790 it was no longer occupied and since then, it has been slowly abandoned.

There are two ways to get to the ruins of Blatnický Castle. From Blatnica on foot (at the end of the village there is a paid parking lot) along yellow marked tourist route through the Gader Valley. After less than 2 km we turn again along yellow into the forest and by a slight climb in about 20 minutes we reach the castle. This trip altogether will take about 40 minutes.

If you are going with a stroller, you can choose an alternative route. As with the first route, we follow the yellow marked track through the Gader Valley, but we ignore the turn to the castle and we still go about 1 km further along the asphalt road. We come to the mountain hut, where after a few meters we turn left. After about 450 m we continue to the cottage Pod hradom and from there up to the castle.
