Description
The largest preserved complex of original folk architecture in Central Europe can be found in the Orava village of Podbieľ. This village surrounded by beautiful alpine nature consists of original wooden houses that give it a fairy tale character.
The architecture, which is rare in Slovakia, is a part of the folk architecture reserve called the Bobrova raľa (Beaver's Bounds). You can find here up to 64 original wooden houses from the end of the 19th century.
In the past, it was nothing extraordinary that two families lived in one house - each in one room, and they had a kitchen with a hallway. We can't imagine it today. Nevertheless, some wooden houses are still inhabited. However, many of them serve as tourist accommodation.
You can move freely in the reservation area. And if it is not enough for you, we recommend stopping in a small ethnographic museum, which is housed in a renovated historic building of a former church school and open during summer tourist season. And maybe you'll be lucky to see traditional carvers of Podbieľ.
