Traditional Slovak castles stand on rocky cliffs or inaccessible hills. Budatín Castle is a light exception, because it stands at the confluence of the rivers Vah and Kysuca, surrounded by a beautiful park. In the past, it served as a water castle protected by rivers and moats.
Budatin Castle is an important historical and architectural monument of Žilina, which now houses the Považské Museum. The oldest part is a huge early Gothic four-storey tower, which was built after the Tartar invasion in the mid-13th century. Today, the Budatín Castle has been beautifully restored, so it retains its luster until today.
During the opening hours, it is possible to walk through the whole area, including the Budatin Castle Park, or visit the chapel and the current exhibition in the room opposite the chapel free of charge. There is a tinker exhibition and castle expositions installed in the castle, which can be viewed with a guide at precisely defined times.
