Demänovská Cave of Liberty, has been astonishing visitors for many years with its rich sinter filling of various colors, the mysterious underground stream of Demänovka, and the glittering lakes. That is why it belongs to the top ten most beautiful caves in Europe and among the most visited caves in Slovakia.
Demänovská Cave of Liberty is located on the northern side of the Low Tatras in the limestone massif of the Demänovská Mountain in the Demänovská Valley. It is about 11 km away from Liptovsky Mikulas.
The Demänovská Cave of Liberty was discovered in 1921 by a discovery dive. After the construction of access paths and the installation of electric lighting, it was made available to the general public in 1924.
The massive underground spaces of the Demänovská Cave of Liberty are spread over five floors, thanks to which visitors can admire a unique waterfall of 6 m, but also a 40 m deep abyss.
The tour route is divided into two circuits. The traditional circuit has a length of 1,150 m and an elevation of 86 m. There are 913 steps on the route. The long circuit has a length of 2,150 m, the same elevation and 1,118 steps. The duration of the tour of the traditional circuit is about 60 minutes, with a large circuit it is approximately 100 min.
The most interesting areas of the Demänovská Cave system include unique sinter forms, ceilings richly decorated with stalactic decoration, typical river-shaped corridors and ceiling troughs. The rarity of the cave are the cave pearls in the form of pea balls in the Grand Dome, rime stalactites and Stone Sun in the Treasury.
The entrance to the cave, which is located in the valley of Točište, is accessible by a serpentine path with information boards. The length of the trail is about 400 m and the elevation is 67 m. The ascent to the cave lasts 10 - 15 min.
