Dúbravská Hlavica is a low hill in the forests starting behind the Bratislava city district Dúbravka. The surrounding deciduous forests are intertwined with a tangle of marked and unmarked hiking trails and bike paths and thus form a popular recreational location for residents of the surrounding area.
However, the location also hides historical secrets. In the years 1914 and 1915 there was an unusual construction activity - war fortifications were built here. These buildings - the so-called caverns - had the task of protecting strategically important communication lines leading not only to Vienna, but also to Moravia in the direction of Brno.
To this day 8 of these fortifications have been more or less preserved and you will be guided to them by an marked educational trail, which begins at the Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary in Dúbravka on Brižitská Street. It is an easy walk that even small children can easily handle, but if you still do not have enough, the local forests offer an inexhaustible number of trails to roam.
The interiors of the fortifications themselves are not open to the public, but you can arrange a tour of one of the caverns even with an engaging commentary.
