In the Roman era, most of our territory lay outside the borders of the Roman Empire. However, before the break of the year, a small part on the right bank of the Danube became part of it. The Kastell Gerulata was located directly in Rusovce.
Gerulata is a Roman military camp that was part of the Roman border of Limes Romanus in the northern part of the empire. There was a settlement around this camp and there were also burial grounds behind the inhabited part. Geraluta was discovered accidentally during construction work. Although known of its existence, targeted archaeological research has been never successful before.
In 1963, Gerulata was declared a cultural monument. Today, the whole complex is part of the Museum of Antique Gerulata, administered by the Museum of Bratislava. The museum's lapidary exhibits a unique collection of stone works of art, complete with showcases with archaeological finds from Gerulata.
The exterior features stone walls of the citadel of the 2nd construction stage and the pillars of the late-fortress from the 4th century. The museum is open to the general public and can be visited seasonally from March to November.
