If you have ever walked through the historic streets of the center of Prešov, your eyes must have rested on the ancient building on Jarkova Street. It is a Caraffa Prison and its origin dates back to the late Gothic of the early 16th century. The building is one of the few that have been preserved in Prešov since that time.
The building of Caraffa Prison is a national cultural monument. It got its name according to Antonio Caraffa, who unjustly executed 24 people and during his life managed to build a torture chamber in the prison too. Later, the building became an armory, but since the beginning of the last century it has been used for archival purposes.
Today, you will find a city gallery in this building. Here you can see new trends in different kinds of visual art - from paintings, graphics, through photography, posters, audio-visual installations, to lighting design or architectural designs.
In addition to exhibitions, regular accompanying activities such as seminars, lectures, workshops, putting books into life, chamber concerts and banquets take place here.
