The Važec military cemetery was completed in 1998 and approximately 6,500 German soldiers from the battlefields of eastern and central Slovakia have found their last resting place here. It is the largest German military cemetery in Slovakia.
It is located next to the D1 highway (or road to Tatranská Lomnica) between Važec and Štrba in the direction to Poprad. The graves of soldiers are decorated with granite crosses with carved inscriptions. The cemetery is maintained all year round.
The majestic peaks of the Tatras stand proudly above the silent place flooded with golden rays of the sun, enhancing the atmosphere and the strong experience of this place of reverence.
The cemetery covers an area of 2.5 ha and is situated at an altitude of 800 meters above sea level. As the Military Cemetery is located on a busy road to the Tatras, we definitely recommend to every tourist heading there to spend at cemetery at least a moment.
