Kláštorisko is a tourist resort in the Slovak Paradise. There are ruins of a Carthusian monastery from the 13th century.
The strategic position of this space was noticed and used by the original inhabitants of Spiš, who fortified it from two relatively accessible parties. In the course of the 12th and 13th centuries, a new fortified town was built on the site of the old fort, surrounded by two walls.
The fortification is located in the more accessible western part of the rocky massif. The place served people as a refuge from Tartar attacks. For this reason, this site was also called Watchtower or Refuge Rock.
In the mid-13th century, Saxons from Spiš began to build a wall on the hilltop in the length of up to 1000 m. Behind the walls, they built a monastery, which then served as the first center of the Carthusian Order.
Kláštorisko is part of the Slovak Paradise. It is ocated approximately in the central area of the National Park. From this place there is a beautiful view of the whole Spiš Basin.
Since Kláštorisko also represents a crossroads of many hiking trails, it is possible to get there almost from any corner of the Slovak Paradise.
