On the bank of the river Dunajec, there is a beautiful spa village Červený Kláštor (The Red Monastery). It welcomes its visitors not only with the charming possibilities of Dunajec rafting, a tangle of hiking trails or exceptional spa, but also with its rich and interesting history.
The history of the village of Červený Kláštor is mainly connected with the national cultural monument - a monastery from the 14th century, set in the beautiful scenery of Pieniny Hills under the top of the Tri Koruny (Three Crowns). In the 14th-16th century it was a Carthusian monastery and in the 18th century a Camaldul monastery. It was particularly made famous for flying monk Cyprian, the cultivation of medicinal herbs and the creation of a large herbarium.
Life in the monastery reached its highest bloom at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. Later, the monastery was burned down by Hussite troops and in 1454, it was attacked by fraternal troops from a nearby camp on the Green Meadow.
At present, the complex of the monastery is completely reconstructed. The central dominant feature of the entire complex is the Gothic church with preserved architectural details.
A museum is open to the public in the monastery's buildings, where visitors can learn about the interesting life of Carthusian and Camaldolian monks.
There is also a healing mineral spring in the part of Červený Kláštor - spa. This healing mineral spring has its characteristic hydrogen sulphide odour. That's why the spa was named Smerdžonka (Stinky place).
